To me there has always been a humbleness to people of the sea. There are some people who live and die by it and others who just visit every once in a while, but once you have seen its magic, it will never let you go. All you need to be is just two feet deep and the ocean takes a part of you, to keep you coming back time and again.
The ocean has many uses. It is a food source, a recreational activity, a place of peace, relaxation, and tranquility and over all, a way of life. I myself have taken it to this extremity; a way of life. I believe it is like this for many people across the world, both, literally as a means of survival and also as a mind set or way of thinking. Although I love eating anything from the oceans waters I am more so focused on the sea as an integral part of life, and being around it, as a way of thinking. When your two feet deep you start to develop this feeling of mutual respect with the ocean and its inhabitants. You start to feel the pulsing of the waves and understand the beat of the ocean. You smell the sea breeze and exhale your personal stress, anger, grief, and pain, and let the wind carry it away. You see the most magnificent, deep, rich, colors in different variations of blue and green for as far as the eyes can see. When the sea fills all of your senses it takes some of your soul with it. In return it gives you a feeling of humbleness. Whether you are the richest person in the world, or the poorest man of this planet, you will always feel wealthiest 2 feet deep. In my opinion the two most humble people of the sea are fishermen and surfers. Each have a need that has to be filled by the ocean. Each has their own respect for themselves, each other, and mother nature herself.
There is a quest in every surfers mind to find that perfect wave. The one wave that makes them feel like their entire life has been made for that very purpose, to surf that exact wave. It is a quest that some people have spent their entire life on a never ending journey always searching for that one wave. Each step of the way they learn something new but also respect the power and presence of nature. Its what brings surfers their humbleness. The thought that they may never find that perfect wave but, are thankful everyday for their journey, the fact that they live to surf that next wave, and that the sea is there to provide to them.
Fishermen. A group of people weathered from experience and the harsh elements of the ocean. Some fish to survive and feed their families while others do for sport or their livelihood. Both have a respect for the sea and its power over their lives. A storm could take them way or their needed catch may never be there however each strive for that next catch. They work from before sunrise till after dark to fulfill their needs. They sit still and quiet and wait for their catch. When the line draws tight or when the spear leaves its owners hands the skill and experience come out. The fact that most days the sea gives these people exactly what they need gives them a humbleness and sincerity that cannot be found in many others. The sea provides a unique experience and quality to any one who comes within two feet of it. However, step in two feet deep and it will change your life forever.
