As a car enthusiast with a job that involves performance and luxury vehicles I get to really see and work with what I love. Every time something new comes in I find something new to see and look at. Sometimes I see perfectly immaculate cars that are maintained on a weekly basis. Some are kept as close to a stock form as possible. Some vehicles are so highly modified that they are barely what they originally were when they came off of the showroom floor. Some people have beaters that they never take care of and never will. Point is everyone has something different and I get to experience these things ever day with my job at PSI.
However there is one group of people who are car enthusiasts that really take to root why we all got into cars in the first place. When you're a kid and someone asks you, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" there was only one answer. "I want to be a racecar driver!" As we grow up we can't all be astronauts or princesses or presidents or whatever we wanted to be. But, this group of people decided they really can be racer drivers.
These people are enthusiasts that really take their passion to the next level. They don't just buy a fast car just to have one. They buy or build a fast car to DRIVE one. Thats the real idea of being a car enthusiasts right? Its to drive and operate and take control of our own passions. Thats what these people do. They are what you call weekend warriors. They might be regular people during the week but on the weekend their true fire comes out on a track. Around the country every weekend people are able to take their cars to a track to really see what their vehicles can do. Whether its a purpose built, competition ready, thoroughbred race car, or the one you drive to work every day they DRIVE their car.
This coming weekend I decided that I would join this group. I will be participating in my first ever track event at Palm Beach International Raceway. This track is a 10 turn 2.034 mile track featuring a 6/10ths of a mile straight. I plan on taking out my daily driver, a 2002 BMW M5. With a new sport suspension, new performance front tires, slotted stop tech rotors, and racing break pads, I will take on the course for the first time. Seeing that it is the first time I have ever had my car out on a track other then a drag strip, I am a little nervous. My car is a performance car, meant to be driven hard at a race track and then driven home afterward, it is a perfect car. I'm really excited to put my car through its paces and see what I can do as a driver and what it can do as a car. I am a little afraid though I might be starting a new hobby when I'm done, and its kind of a costly one. Either way wish me luck!
